I’m excited about this new collaboration between foraus - Swiss Forum on Foreign Policy and Giga as we launch a pilot program connecting policy expertise to global connectivity challenges. --> If you are a Master’s student at a Swiss university with a passion for ICT and the impact of technology on our world, this is your chance to get involved! The program offers: - Two (expenses covered) trips to Geneva for workshops and events with global experts - Team research on different aspects of connectivity challenges - The opportunity to co-author a policy brief on this critical topic For everyone else: please help us spread the word so we can reach as many bright minds as possible!
Applications are now open! 🌍2.6 billion people remain disconnected from the Internet, including half of the world’s schools: 500 million students lack reliable connectivity, limiting their access to learning and opportunities. To address this challenge, foraus and Giga (an ITU/UNICEF initiative) are launching the Giga Knowledge Spark ⚡️ in October 2025. The idea is to bring together students from Swiss universities with policymakers, experts, and international organisations to co-develop innovative policy solutions that make universal school connectivity viable and sustainable. Through this programme, we create a unique space where theory meets practice, empowering students to turn their ideas into concrete policy recommendations, while connecting directly with international experts and decision-makers in Geneva 🤝. “If I had an hour to solve a problem I'd spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about solutions.” ― Albert Einstein Without data we cannot understand the problem, and without understanding we cannot create effective solutions. That is why open data matters - and what we discussed in the panel I joined this week at ACM SIGCOMM2025 Coimbra "Beyond Access: Engaging the SIGCOMM Community in Data-Driven Broadband Policymaking" Data gaps are real. At Giga, we found that in a sample of 8 countries, 23 000 schools where not correctly located in any data base. We have now mapped 2.2 million schools of what we suspect are around 6 millions schools worldwide (nobody really knows). Every school we map - and track real time data for - helps build a clearer picture of where Digital Inclusion is lacking. And where support can be most impactful and long-lasting. It was great hearing from Niccolò Comini from World Bank, Steve Song from ISOC and Mike Jensen from APC on the incredible work they are doing to close these gaps. It is clear that open data is key in enabling informed decisions that fast-track universal, meaningful access and Digital Inclusion. Thanks Shaddi Hasan for bringing us together. My two take-aways: 1) We need more data on under-served areas to understand the realities of the unconnected 2) Sharing data openly strengthens society, markets and policy. Giga was honoured to to join UNESCO’s Global Conference on “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era” for International Literacy Day. 🌏 📚 💡 Our key takeaways: ▪️ We must shift from “reading the writing” to “reading the world,” moving beyond traditional literacy and laying the groundwork for an inclusive digital transition. ▪️ Real progress is happening to support inclusive literacy, in priority areas such as local language content, inclusion of children with disabilities, older persons, helping ensure no one is left behind. ▪️ Through its work supporting governments to connect every school in the world, Giga is proud to provide the foundations for an inclusive digital transformation in education and lifelong learning for all. Big thanks to UNESCO for this insightful opportunity and continued valuable partnership.
